Official Ruling
You can reveal 3 cards, then trash all of them. Note that the effect reads, “you may,” so you can choose whether or not to activate the effect when digivolving, regardless of whether or not your opponent has any Digimon in play. If you choose not to activate it, you don't reveal or trash any cards.
